SECTION-A
1. Answer five questions, selecting at least two from each section (in 50-60 words each)
Poetry Section
(i) Why does Miss Pushpa smile all the time? (Goodbye Party for Miss Pushpa T.S.)
(i) Why is the refugee mother described here different from other mothers? (Refugee Mother and Child)
(iii) What appears on the background of the photograph? (This is a Photograph of Me)
(iv) Give the central idea, of the poem 'I Will Embrace Only the Sun'.
Prose Section
(1) Why do some people hesitate to shake hands with others? (On Shaking Hands)
(ii) How has the human race improved over the last few thousand years? (No Man is an Island)
(iii) What does the writer tell us about the plight of the journalists? (Freedom of the Press)
(iv) What happened when Ngugi went to a colonial school? (An Excerpt from Decolonizing the Mind.) 2x5=10
2. Attempt two questions, selecting one from poetry and one from prose in about 100-120 words each:
Poetry Section
(i) Discuss the trauma, the suffering and the sense of loss that is at the centre of the poem, 'Refugee Mother and Child'.
OR
Trace the development of thought in the poem 'This is a Photograph of Me.'
Prose Section
(ii) Trace the arguments of Minoo Masani in favour of the best form of government. (No Man is an Island)
OR
Summarise in your own words the importance of the freedom of the press as given in the chapter -Freedom of the Press. 3x2=6
SECTION-B
3. Write a paragraph on any one of the following:
(i) Corruption in Government Offices
(ii) The Place of English in India
(iii) Democracy vs. Dictatorship
4. Write a brief report about a horrible rail accident for publication in a newspaper.
OR
Write a newspaper report on 'Grow More Trees' to save the environmental pollution.
